Human perception of local shape from shading under variable lighting
It is commonly believed that humans exhibit lighting invariant object recognition. Here we present psychophysical evidence to the contrary. We examine the perception of qualitative local shape from shading and find that significant variations occur as a function of the lighting. These variations have two logically distinct causes: first, there are inherent ambiguities between shape and shading ...
متن کاملTowards Accurate Recovery of Shape from Shading under Diffuse Lighting
A new surface radiance model for diffuse lighting is presented which incorporates shadows, interreflections, and surface orientation. An algorithm is presented that uses this model to compute shape-from-shading under diffuse lighting. The algorithm is tested on both synthetic and real images, and is found to perform more accurately than the only previous algorithm for this problem.
متن کاملDepth discrimination from shading under diffuse lighting.
The human visual system has a remarkable ability to interpret smooth patterns of light on a surface in terms of 3-D surface geometry. Classical studies of shape-from-shading perception have assumed that surface irradiance varies with the angle between the local surface normal and a collimated light source. This model holds, for example, on a sunny day. One common situation in which this model f...
متن کاملPerspective Shape from Shading for Wide-FOV Near-Lighting Endoscopes
Near-Lighting Endoscopes are self-illuminated cameras often used in minimal invasive surgery. Since they have a wide field of view, their images are affected by high radial distortion(RD) and reduced resolution in the periphery of the image. Perspective Shape From Shading has been used for reconstruction but suffers from the problem of resolution and high RD when endoscopes are used. We propose...
متن کاملAlgorithms for Shape from Shading, Lighting Direction and Motion
A very interesting approach to the integration of several features into the process of analyzing shape may be based on [1, Theorem 2, Section 3.5] by Aloimonos and Shulman . In this study, the implementation of this approach was tested by comparing the results of three different algorithms. For applying this approach, several specific model assump-tions and situations in scene space have to be ...
